Purple Belt under Professor Jason Roebig of Axis Jiu Jitsu Academy, Gold Coast
Where it all began…
I was 24 years old when I started jiu-jitsu. I’d just started work as a medical resident, and was looking for a sport that would challenge me physically, mentally, and be an efficient way to stay active on a busy shift work schedule. So…I tried boxing for fitness. And I wasn’t particularly good at it. At that stage, I met another doctor who was training at Axis Jiu Jitsu, which shared the other half of the warehouse with the boxing gym. He convinced me to step over to the other side, and try some of the odd looking pyjama wrestling that I’d seen going on over there. I haven’t looked back since. I’ve trained continuously since then, competed every chance I’ve gotten at local and international competitions, and travelled to as many training camps as I could find around the world. Jiu jitsu became a huge part of my life as I progressed through medical training (I’m currently an advanced trainee in Emergency medicine), and now it’s as much a part of me as being a doctor is.
I am hugely grateful and honoured to be part of such an incredible group of people at Hyperfly Australia. They have done so much to support the jiu jitsu community, and I’ve worn their gear since early white belt days. Their motto “You Can’t Teach Heart” resonates strongly with my approach to training and competing. A match is never over, until it’s over. And if you’ve fought to the end with all of your heart, even if you’ve lost, you can hold your head high afterwards. YCTH supports that special type of person who turns up day after day, gets their body and mind crushed on the mats, and becomes a better athlete and person in the process.
